At a well-presented function at the Supersport headquarters in Randburg on Thursday afternoon, Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves Promotions announced details of the October 22 tournament to be held at Emperors Palace near Kempton Park. In the main event in the final of the cruiserweight Super Four, in an all southpaw clash, South Africa’s junior heavyweight champion 24-year-old Kevin Lerena (15-1, 8 KOs) goes in against the 23-year-old WBC International cruiserweight champion Micki Nielsen (22-0, 14 KOs) from Denmark. The winner will receive an amount of $60,000 US dollars and the loser $40,000.
In the main supporting bout, in another clash of southpaws, former IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden returns from America and meets the interim WBO Africa welterweight champion Namibian Sacky Shikukutu in a bout for the vacant WBA Pan African welterweight title.
Also, former WBA “super” minimumweight champion Hekkie Budler returns to action when he faces fellow South African Siyabongo Siyo in a fight for the vacant WBA Pan African minimumweight title.
A number of top South African fighters took part in shadow boxing and light sparring, including an outstanding demonstration of skipping by strawweight DeeJay Kriel.
Amongst the former and present fighters in attendance were Pierre Coetzer, Dingaan Thobela, Welcome Ncita, Harold Volbrecht, Sebastiaan Rothmann, Hekkie Budler, Simphiwe Khonco Peter Smith, Brian Mitchell, Jeff Ellis and Kevin Lerena.
