Two USA boxers were victorious on the first day of Olympic boxing competition. USA lightweight Juan Zenon Balderas Jr. defeated Berik Abdrakhmanov of Kazakhstan and USA light flyweight Miguel Nico Hernandez topped Italian Manuel Cappai. Scores were 3-0 in both matches.
In other notable matches, UK light flyweight Galal Yafai beat Cameroon’s Simplice Fotsala 3-0, UK lightweight Joseph Cordina edged Filipino Charly Coronel Suarez 2-1, unbeaten WBA #11 featherweight Carmine Tommasone (15-0, 4 KOs as a pro) of Italy, a former EBU-EU champion, defeated Mexico’s Lindolfo Delgado 3-0 in a lightweight match, Brazilian heavyweight Juan Nogueira defeated Australian Jason Eric Whateley 3-0.
Still to come: former world title challenger Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (34-2, 20 KOs as a pro) takes on Brazilian light heavyweight Michael Borges, power-punching Colombian light heavyweight Juan Carlos Carrillo meets Srkin Adylbek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan, and the UK heavyweight Lawrence Okolie faces Igor Jakubowski.
