Newly crowned WBO light-flyweight female champion Louisa “Bang Bang Lulu” Hawton (7-0, 3 KOs) talks to Fightnews.com® about her world championship victory over Kei Takenaka in Hyogo, Japan four days ago and how her wish is to meet her idol Manny Pacquiao.
Tell me about your world title win in Japan…
It was a tough fight but I was in control in most of the ten rounds. Takenaka was very courageous boxing in her home country of Japan. I was strong in all the rounds and in round ten I had Takenaka down for an eight count but she finished the fight.
Your mandatory defense of the title is in 180 days. Will that fight be in Australia?
There have been offers for me to defend the title in Europe, Japan and Mexico but I’m hoping we can defend the title in Australia.
You have had only seven professional fights. Did you box as an amateur?
Yes – I boxed a few amateur fights in 2013 and also trained as a Muay Thai boxer.
You are trained by former world light middleweight contender Mark Janssen. Mark has great training credentials having trained former world heavyweight contender Kali Meehan. How long has Mark been your trainer?
Mark trained me for the world title fight and he has improved me 100%. I feel fortunate to have him as my trainer. I’m sure it will be a successful relationship.
Your father is Australian-born and your mother was born in the Philippines. Has there been any other boxers in your family?
I’m the first boxer in my family but my mother is from same town in the Philippines where Manny Pacquiao comes from. Manny is my idol in boxing and it is my wish to meet him one day.
