The fight seemed to be very close when Ward landed a right hand that hurt Kovalev midway through the final round. Kovalev survived but ended up with his back against the ropes, where Ward landed three hard body shots that hurt Kovalev further and prompted referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight.

The end came at 2:29 of the round.

The judges were split after seven rounds: 67-66 and 67-66 for Ward, 68-65 for Kovalev.

Ward (32-0, 16 knockouts) and Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs) entered the fight rated Nos. 1 and 2 pound for pound in the RING ratings. The RING 175-pound title was vacant.
