Crawford: Win over Indongo makes me #1 pound-for-pound

By Wil Esco

Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo has all the major titles on the line.

Tomorrow night Terence Crawford squares off with Julius Indongo on ESPN as both fighters seek to unify all four major titles in the junior welterweight division. Currently both fighters hold two belts apiece; Crawford has the WBC and WBO belts while Indongo has the IBF and WBA titles.

During a media conference call Crawford says that should he capture all of the titles, there’s no question that he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

“If I win all these titles, I must be crowned as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. No discussion.”

But really there is a legitimate discussion to be had. I, myself, love Crawford as a fighter and becoming the undisputed 140lb champion a big deal (at least depending on your perspective), but it’s hard for me to believe this fight gives him the top spot — which is meant as no disrespect to Indongo.

It’s just that I believe most people, myself included, would rate Andre Ward’s two wins over Sergey Kovalev as a bigger deal than Crawford beating Indongo. And let’s face it, Crawford is the comfortable favorite to win this fight for a reason. Indongo is good, but he’s not percieved to be in Crawford’s class.

But you tell me, fans, where would you rank Crawford P4P with a win tomorrow night?
