The European jr featherweight title bout scheduled between champion Abigail “Bebe” Medina (17-3-2, 8 KOs) at his first defense and challenger Martin Ward (25-3-1, 5 KOs) has been postponed to September 23rd in Newcastle, England, according to Ward’s promoter Phil Jeffries who won the respective bid. Logistic problems connected with the indicated venue are the reason for this switching, it was reported.
A very interesting clash in the flyweight division looms as champion Thomas Masson (17-3-1, 5 KOs) will have to take on young British and former world title challenger Charlie Edwards (10-1, 4 KOs), the new EBU official challenger. Edwards lost by the hands of tough Pinoy puncher John Riel Casimero last September before coming back with two victories, whose last was for the British title. Masson, aged 27, is three years older than Edwards and has already been European champion twice, being now at the first defense of his second reign.
The southpaw Frankie Gavin (25-3, 15 KOs), from Birmingham, United Kingdom, is the new co-challenger along with Frenchman Ahmed El Mousaui (26-3-1, 6 KOs) for the vacant European Union (EU) welterweight title. The British, who is still promoted by Eddie Hearn after the first part of career under Frank Warren’s managerial wing, lost via TKO against Sam Eggington in round eight last October after a grueling bout. He has then rebounded with two victories in 2017 in six-round fights.
The vacant European Union (EU) heavyweight title will be at stake between Timur Stark (8-2, 7 KOs) and Gabriel Tronche, who will be included in the next EBU ratings.
In other news, Italian Lenny Bottai’s loss to Frenchman Jean Michael Hamilcaro last Friday in Livorno, Italy, although a questionable one, has forced EBU to scratch him out from the mandatory position for European Union (EU) titlist Zakaria Attou. It is confirmed that Bottai’s handlers are about to submit a formal request to the IBF in order to obtain an immediate rematch for the IBF Mediterranean title, which was the belt at stake last Friday.
Talking about IBF Regional titles to be stage in Italy, last national champion Gianluca Ceglia (13-3, 2 KOs) is paired with Spaniard Eloy Iglesis (17-3-2, 2 KOs), a former national champion himself too, to fight for the vacant International lightweight belt of the sanctioning body, to take place on June 30 in a Boxe Loreni promoted card in San Valentino Torio, Italy.
