Eddie Hearn: HBO showing interest in Sam Eggington

Could Sam Eggington be on HBO airwaves in the near future?

European welterweight champion Sam Eggington fights next on Saturday, when he defends his title against France’s Mohamed Mimoune on the Crolla-Burns undercard, a fight he’s expected to win.

If he does win, promoter Eddie Hearn says that HBO have expressed some interest in bringing him to the States, where Eggington believes he could impress audiences with his action style:

“I wouldn’t even say a dream, because I would have never thought that would have happened. It just didn’t come into my brain at the start. The fact that it could happen and I could go and box over in the States would be huge. People always say, if you were in America, people would love you. I feel like I’ve got a style that people enjoy anyway – everyone likes to see a tear-up. If I get the chance to go over there and do what I do, I would be over the moon.”

Hearn added that at the moment, HBO see him as an opponent for someone:

“I was in New York yesterday. HBO were saying to me ‘I like this Eggington guy, he’s a warrior.’ They are actually taking note, but they are looking at him at the moment as a good opponent. I don’t want him to be an opponent for someone. We need to build him into a position where he is good enough to go on and win world titles.”

Eggington (21-3, 13 KO) is just 23 years old, so he’s got time to raise his stock and build into being a real contender. The question is whether or not he can do that.
