The big fights take a brief break, but we’ve got some action this weekend.
Thursday, March 23
ESPN2, 10:00 pm ET, Jason Quigley vs Glen Tapia, Randy Caballero vs Jesus Ruiz. This is the first Golden Boy on ESPN(2) card of their new deal, bringing boxing back to ESPN under another gimmick. Promoter-specific shows of this type rarely result in good matchmaking or notable fights, but, well, it’s boxing on TV, and that’s enough for some folks. Anyway, Quigley puttered along for a couple of years after turning pro in 2014, and lately has started to step up some. Tapia is a sideways step from James de la Rosa last year, but at least it’s not a step back. Caballero is a former titleholder who never got to defend his belt. Marlen Esparza is also making her pro debut. BLH will have live coverage.
Saturday, March 25
SHO / Sky Sports (UK), 3:00 pm ET, Jorge Linares vs Anthony Crolla. The show also features Martin J Ward vs Maxi Hughes for the British 130 pound title, plus Brian Rose vs Jack Arnfield and Marcus Morrison vs Jason Welborn. The Showtime telecast in the U.S. will have just the main event, and starts at 6:30 pm ET. We’ll be here for the main event. BLH will have live coverage.
RAN Boxen (GER), 5:50 pm ET, Tyron Zeuge vs Isaac Ekpo, Deniz Ilbay vs Angelo Frank. Zeuge will be defending the WBA “world” super middleweight title in this fight. Neither man has ever established himself on the world stage, really, but that’s not to say they can’t.
Televisa (MEX), 11:00 pm ET, Jhonny Gonzalez vs Francisco Contreras.
Azteca (MEX), 11:35 pm ET, Jorge Paez Jr vs Daniel Sandoval, Emanuel Navarrete vs Francisco Gabriel Pina. Zulia Munoz, the WBC super flyweight titleholder, is also scheduled to fight on this show, but she currently has no opponent.
