Well, it’s happening.
Floyd Mayweather. Conor McGregor. It’s happening. As ridiculous as it may be — and it may be pretty damn ridiculous — it’s happening. A generation’s greatest boxer will face a UFC superstar in a boxing match on August 26 in Las Vegas.
Yahoo! Sports reports that full terms were not available for their report, but that the fight will happen in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand or T-Mobile Arena. Mayweather Promotions has a hold on the MGM Grand for that date, and that’s the venue where Floyd has fought his last 12 fights, dating back to 2007.
So, well, here we go. Whether you consider this a carnival sideshow or not, it’s coming, and it’s going to be big business, if for nothing else than pure curiosity. A top UFC fighter has never had a big boxing match before, and certainly not against an opponent like Mayweather. About as close as we’ve come going the other way was a washed-up James Toney stepping into the Octagon to face Randy Couture in 2010. This, needless to say, will be a much bigger deal.
What’s your prediction? How long will Mayweather carry this? Or have you lost your mind and decided that a novice boxer is going to land a SHOCKING LEFT HAND on the best boxer of the modern age?
