Manny Pacquiao will be fighting on basic cable for the first time in the U.S.
Manny Pacquiao’s Australian debut against Jeff Horn will also mark Pacquiao’s debut on basic cable in the United States. Top Rank and ESPN have struck a deal which will allow the network to air the fight live starting at 9pm ET on July 1. And not only will this be Pacquiao’s first fight on basic cable, it will also be his first non-pay-per-view since 2005.
“Working with Top Rank on a match normally seen on pay-per-view is a significant moment for ESPN and for boxing fans,” ESPN president John Skipper said. “This fight, along with ESPN’s in-depth programming surrounding the fight, joins Wimbledon, Home Run Derby and the ESPYS in a stellar early July programming lineup.”
The entire telecast will also be run on live on ESPN Deportes as well as steam on the ESPN app. Frequent ESPN commentators Teddy Atlas, Joe Tessitore, and former world champion Timothy Bradley Jr. will call the fights from ringside.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is expected to make the media rounds today to promote the upcoming fight, and expected to appear on several ESPN shows throughout the day including Mike and Mike, First Take, and SportsNation.
“The world has followed amazing Manny since he burst onto the scene in his U.S. debut in 2001, where he knocked out Lehlo Ledwaba to win his second of a record eight division world titles,” Arum said. “We are excited that ESPN will air this fight throughout the U.S. in both English and Spanish. It’s going to be an unbelievable event.”
The Pacquiao-Horn telecast will kick off with with Shane Mosley Jr. (10-1, 7 KOs) taking on David Toussaint (10-0, 8 KOs) in a scheduled 8-rounder, with the main card featuring Michael Conlan (2-0, 2 KOs) taking on Jarrett Owen (5-4-3, 2 KOs) in a scheduled six-rounder. Additionally junior bantamweight Jerwin Ancajas (26-1-1, 17 KOs), of MP promotions, will make the second defense of his IBF title against Teiru Kinoshita (25-1-1, 8 KOs) as the Pacquiao-Horn co-feature.
