Vasyl Lomachenko toys with, stops overmatched Marriaga

LOS ANGELES – Vasyl Lomachenko stopped Miguel Marriaga after the seventh round of a mismatch Saturday night at Microsoft Theater.

Lomachenko (9-1, 7 knockouts) toyed with Marriaga (25-3, 21 KOs) the entire fight, peppering him with all kinds of punches from all kinds of angles and taking almost nothing in return in as one-sided a fight as anyone will ever see.

Marriaga settled into a survival posture while throwing an occasional punch. However, that didn’t work, as he took a beating when all was said and done.

The Colombian went down in the third round (from a straight left) and again in the final seconds of the seventh (from an overhand left), after which his corner saved him from further punishment.

Lomachenko suffered a cut, the result of an accidental head butt, but even that didn’t slow him down.

The Ukrainian’s clowning provided the most entertaining moments of the fight but, to Marriaga, this was no joke.

Lomachenko was making the third defense of his WBO junior lightweight title.
