Billy Joe Saunders think Gennady Golovkin will have to win big in order to get a decision over Canelo Alvarez.
WBO middleweight titleholder Billy Joe Saunders talks to Fight Hub TV about the middleweight rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin and where he fits in the picture. Check it out…
Saunders on a lukewarm response to the announcement he’ll be fighting Martin Murray next:
“You know, people wanna see me and Golovkin, me and Canelo, which I was up for but you can’t blame them for not fighting me because, you know, they’ve got a lot of money to be earned with the rematch. But I’m sure that after this, be patient for another four months, September, and I’m hoping that you’ll see the big one.”
On if he’s been hearing that he’ll get a shot at the winner if he beats Murray:
“…the world’s got a chance to see who the best middleweight on the planet is when either one of them fights next — if it’s not a draw again. You know, then I’ve got the missing piece to the jigsaw. I’m rated up there now so we’ll see who holds all the marbles, I’m ready to rock n’ roll…but I’m not overlooking Martin Murray, not in the slightest.”
On how he sees the Canelo-Golovkin rematch playing out:
“You know, I personally think on a De La Hoya card, you know — and I say this even if I fight Canelo on there — that Canelo’s the only man they tried to rob Floyd Mayweather for. So I personally think if it’s close Golovkin won’t get it…If it’s a close points decision that Canelo will get it.”
On if he believes Golden Boy is willing to match Canelo against him:
“I’m not saying it’s Canelo but, you know, it’s these managers and promoters now. Like I’ve got a good management brought by MTK, good promotion on Frank Warren, and, you know, when you’ve got a cash cow bringing in $15-20 million a show, are you really gonna want to take a chance on getting beat?
“I mean at the moment it’s paying off with him and Golovkin because they’re getting ridiculous money but, let’s say they’re getting $100 million to take a chance whether he gets beat by Golovkin, where they’ll probably only be getting $25 million taking a chance to get beat by me…but my team is all up for it.”
On if he feels he needs to fight the winner of Canelo-GGG for his own legacy:
“Well I think the fans and the boxing world needs that fight to see who the best is. You know, I feel that I’ve proven myself in my last performance that I’m in the running so let’s see. Let’s see what pans out.”
